Everything You Need to Know About Mixing Chainsaw Fuel

If you’re new to using a chainsaw, you might be wondering about the mixing chainsaw fuel process.

Although it sounds complicated, it’s easier than you think. If you’re ready to learn how to do it, follow this simple 7 step guide.

Read on to get started.

1. Read the Chainsaw Manual

Before you begin mixing chainsaw fuel, you should read the manual and check for any special recommendations. Although most chainsaws operate using a 5:1 ratio, you want to make sure there aren’t additional instructions.

If you didn’t keep the manual, you can always check with the manufacturer to get a copy of it.

2. Get the Right Container

Once you’re ready to purchase gasoline, make sure you get the right container. It’s important to note, you can’t just place gasoline in any container.

Gasoline containers are specially made to reduce and prevent fuel spillage. These containers also stop condensation and permeation, which makes them environmentally friendly.

3. Use Premium Gasoline

Although you might be tempted to do so, don’t use cheap gasoline. Use the premium stuff.

A minimum of 89 octane rating should be used in your mixture. Any lower and you risk increasing the chainsaw engine’s temperature. This could cause piston seizure and permanent damage to the engine.

On top of using premium gasoline, you should use premium 2-cycle oils. This oil offers the best engine protection extending the lifespan of your chainsaw.

4. Follow the 50:1 Ratio

It’s important you follow the 50:1 ratio in the mixture for optimal performance. The 50 represents the amount of gasoline in the mixture. and the 1 represents the oil.

  • 1 gallon of gasoline = 2.6 fluid ounces of oil
  • 2.5 gallons of gasoline = 6.4 fluid ounces of oil
  • 5 gallons of gasoline = 12.8 fluid ounces of oil

5. Mix It Properly

Once you’ve measured the quantities of both fluids, it’s time you begin combining them.

Pour the oil into a canister and then add the gasoline. Ensure you close the canister all the way before you begin to shake it. Shake until the mixture has combined properly.

6. Before You Begin

To ensure only clean fuel goes into the gasoline tank, you should clean the fuel cap and the area surrounding to avoid any dirt and debris going in.

You should position the chainsaw upwards to prevent any spills from coming in contact with your skin or your clothes.

To avoid breathing in the fumes as much as possible, open the cap slowly so the fumes don’t release at once.

7. Store It Properly

You’ll want to mix enough product to use for a few days of work. However, keep in mind the mix should only be stored for a maximum of 3 months.

So it’s not necessary to mix large quantities of fuel.
